Letting Go of Possession

~ Chapter 9 ~

It is so very tempting to believe that jealousy is somehow connected with love. Jealousy arises from the notion that if someone enjoys apples they must stop enjoying oranges. Subtle competition between friends for the attention of a potential lover keeps us stuck in a primitive ape state that prevents our harmonious release from the hell of separation. Of course, if we release the notion that apples negate oranges and vice versa we eliminate the need for scarcity thinking.

Jealousy also stems from the notion of possession, which will seem bizarre, as we look back upon ourselves from an enlightened state. It will seem sad and silly to think that we used to say “my girlfriend” and “my boyfriend.” It will seem pathetic that we used to so quickly establish ownership in social situations by introducing another human being as “my” wife/husband. It will seem equally ridiculous to look back upon the body language we used with a lover to communicate to everyone in our environment that our lover was “off limits” and any attempt to connect with our lover was grounds for violence.
